From Neale Donald Walsch http://www.theglobalconversation.com/blog/?p=883

God is the source of all help to people in the world, but most people are asking God for the wrong kind of help—and even then they are not turning to God except when it is too late.

Most people are asking God to change things. They are asking for a change in the situations, circumstances, and events of their lives—not understanding that they are asking God to undo the very conditions that they, themselves, have co-created.

They are asking God for peace on Earth, and goodwill between all people—while they, themselves, continue to co-create the opposite.

They are asking God for health, safety, and security—while they, themselves, continue to co-create the opposite.

They are asking God for everyone to have an equal opportunity for full self-expression, for abundance, and for personal happiness—while they, themselves, continue to co-create the opposite.

Yes, it is true. All the while that we humans send up our prayers to God, we deny that we, ourselves, are continuing to co-create the opposite of that for which we say we yearn.

The chief problem facing humanity today is our absolute refusal to accept responsibility for the experiences that we, ourselves, are collaboratively creating.

What God deeply desires us to do is to allow God to empower us. Yet when we turn to God for the wrong kind of help at the wrong time, it disempowers us, because it affirms our thought that that we are the victims of the circumstances in which we find ourselves. As well, it furthers our thought that we are powerless to alter the circumstance we have created, and that God is now the only one who can help us–if there even is a “God.”

As long as most people think of themselves as being at the effect of the events or circumstances in their lives, they are bound to repeat them, because they are not aware of how or why those events have occurred.

This is a declaration, in 40 words, of the precise reason that life is the way it is on the Planet Earth today.

People are not at the effect of the events and circumstances in their lives, they are at cause in the matter.

Every event and circumstance on Earth is jointly produced, placed into the collective reality as a collaborative creation of The Collective Itself. And the tragedy is that The Collective does not know this—or, worse yet, does know this, and merely acts as if it does not.

The result of this is that most people wind up turning to God at the wrong time….usually after, rather than before, events have taken place or circumstances have been created.

This is because most people do not know who they truly are, nor do they have an accurate understanding of what their relationship with God is.

Thus, people think that most of them are at the effect of events and conditions such as conflict and war, financial collapse, political upheaval, violence and killing. It is the tiny few who are in power who are creating them, and the masses are left to only endure them.

And when it comes to so-called Acts of Nature, even the powerful few are thought to be at the effect of life. No humans anywhere can be said to have anything to do with global warming (which half the planet continues to deny is even occurring), earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes, raging wildfires, torrential rains, or tsunamis—or the increase in disease among the Earth’s people, such as the growing cancer rate, or the increase in early heart attacks, stroke, and Alzheimer’s.

When an entire culture refuses to believe that it has anything to do with what is occurring, it cannot do anything about what is occurring.

And this, in 25 words, is a summation of the present reality on Planet Earth.

The Conversations Movement is about doing something about it. And the first thing we all have to do about it is to talk about it. We have to talk about what nobody wants to talk about. And that is: Who is creating the circumstances we decry–and how are we all collectively doing it? And how can we collectively UNdo it?

That’s what we’re going to continue doing right here, in this space, in the days and weeks ahead. But we have to do more than just talk about it here. We have to talk about it everywhere. That’s why we are encouraging the formation of Global Conversation Discussion Groups all over the world. To get the conversation going on the subjects that nobody wants to talk about.

Have you formed a Global Conversation Discussion Group in your community? If not, can you think of a reason why you have not? Here are some you may have considered.

1. It won’t do any good.

2. You don’t have enough time.

3. No one will understand what you are trying to do.

4. No one will come.

5. People won’t know what to do about the things we talk about.

We are going to tackle these common objections one at a time in the coming entries here. Please stay tuned. Over a quarter of a million people have visited this website. That’s enough collective energy to change the world.

There is a difference between wishing for a thing and being ready to receive it. No one is ready for a thing until he believes he can acquire it. The state of mind must be belief, not mere hope or wish. Open-mindedness is essential for belief. Closed minds do not inspire faith, courage, and belief. ~ Napoleon Hill

Beliefs are fundamental in shaping your reality for better or worse, and affect all areas of your life, impacting the levels of success, happiness, and love you create and allow.

Limiting beliefs may be hidden, passive or unconscious. Think about what strategies limiting beliefs may cause you to adopt (i.e. what you feel you must do, or how you feel you should behave to succeed given your beliefs). Limiting beliefs might present as behaviors like people pleasing, trying to prove your worth, acting aloof and nonchalant, withdrawing, being pessimistic, acting over-confident, creating drama or being antagonistic to get attention, sacrificing or being a martyr, in drama, a victim, etc. These kinds of behavior strategies are self-defeating and only perpetuate the belief that lies at their root. Being conscious of this is one step on the road to freedom!

Your negative ego has an investment in negative beliefs. It will interpret life's events to feed the lies of these self-condemning beliefs in a self-defeating catch-22 pattern. Notice defense and resistance when you face a limiting belief. All negative beliefs around love (being loved, loving and loveable), belonging, mattering and significance, as well as around your value and deserving, all of which will impact your sense of worth, are important to identify and release.

Take time to reflect and uncover your limiting beliefs; watch for when you feel frustrated, defensive, judgmental and rigid in your thinking or possibilities. Catch yourself and then ask yourself “what do I believe about this that is causing my feelings” – “is that true?”. Journal and / or meditate on when, how & where your limiting beliefs are presenting themselves in your life. Use a mirror to ask your Essence where it is being blocked by ego’s limiting beliefs. Bring limiting beliefs to your awareness to allow choice and change.

Own your light, your gifts, and your goodness. Own the love that you are and acknowledge your inherent innocence and worth. Whatever you have experienced in this life time, the truth shall ever remain: you are a Divine being born of love, and you are loved totally and unconditionally by the source of creation, ever and always. There is nothing you need to win that love, and nothing you can do to lose it, for you are loved completely.

Allow yourself healing and the attraction of resources that will help you release that which you are not, and unravel and embrace the brilliance and love that you are! You are not your darkness, failings or mistakes. Love the uglier sides of you, for it is they that need it the most. Accept yourself for who and where you are right now. Lovingly create NEW beliefs for a fresh new life!

Mold a NEW self-image. Who do you want to be? YOU decide! What do you want to create? Get imagining! You have gifts, talents and strengths, and you can work on these. You have certain traits and characteristics, and that is wonderful! And you are a powerful creator, whether you realize it or not. You are creating your reality in every moment. It's not a question of whether you can manifest, but of how you already are. Choose beliefs, thoughts, feelings and attitudes that most serve you.

Many personal development and spiritual work focuses on healing issues, processing and overcoming blocks and problems, but you don't want to get stuck there! Sometimes it can be more about letting go of what you're not to reveal who you truly are, and owning your innocence and love. As you accept yourself as you are, you more easily let go of what you're not.

Judgment only makes things stick, so have COMPASSION for yourself. Be loving and tender with yourself. Be kind and become your own best friend. And ERADICATE those faulty beliefs!! ~ inspired by an ad shared by www.beliefbusters.com

Bring your journal or paper if you want to journal. RSVP's are always appreciated. See you Tuesday! Nancy

I am often asked what is the work I do and how do I do it. This is my Unique System, the way I work with my clients and students and the way I first transformed my own life. Here is the foundation for my work. I serve people through this work in many different ways, including my Inner Circle monthly group coaching program, my private individual coaching program, along with my ongoing products, programs and services. I invite you to read this and then click on the labeled tabs above to learn more about each of these.

"DISCOVER"

Discover: Begin creating awareness. Whatever you are ready to work on and release will show up. Learn to work with the unconscious, subconscious and conscious to bring to the surface what no longer serves you so that you can shift it and move forward, out of what you don’t want and into what you do want.

"SHIFT"

Shift: Clearing, healing and resolving what is getting in your way. If it is showing up in your world, you have called it forth into consciousness so you can release it. There are many ways to do this. It is far-reaching and will create powerful change in yourself and your life. Energy Healing really does work. It is one part of the whole. At any given time, you have a variety of life situations you are experiencing. They may not always at first appear to be related, or you are so close to them that you cannot see what is really going on. These life situations are symptoms, and they can lead you directly to the root causes and the underlying energetic situations you are playing out at your deepest level. When you make changes at this level, these things stop showing up. They are showing up for you to clear, heal and resolve, and they are coming to the surface now, because you are asking for things, you are setting intentions and radiating desire. These things that are showing up are in response to that. This is what is showing up that no longer serves you, that you cannot take with you where you want to go, that you cannot hold onto as who you want to be, and that will not be able to exist alongside what you want to have. All of this holds valuable feedback and resources so you can get to the root cause, stop the symptomology that is the repeating life situations showing up in their varied forms, and get to the core of what is really going on, so you can consciously create change for the better.

"ACT"

Act: Your next step is the one that most people get stuck at, and many do not move forward at this point, often for many, many years, sometimes for a lifetime. You must take new action and get new results. Learn to read the feedback, do your work in the physical third-dimensional world, and allow the Universal Energy to work with you and for you. Energy Healing works in the Fifth Dimension. The Fourth Dimension is where we work with our thoughts and feelings. When we stop here, we create a rich inner world that is not reflected in our outer world. We long to escape more and more into this world. Our physical world continues to deteriorate. At some point, we begin to lose the ability to create what we need to meet our basic needs. We are left longing for love, money, relationships, fulfilling work, a home that is our sanctuary, and other worldly things that continue to elude us.

"BELIEVE"

Believe: As we take new action, we are able to build new beliefs, to find and integrate new evidence to support these beliefs, to get rid of limiting beliefs and to anchor in new desirable beliefs that support us very powerfully in manifesting what we desire. We first must do the emotional work of clearing, healing and resolving. Much of this has been overlayed upon who we truly authentically are throughout our life and beginning in utero. This is the stuff that keeps us stuck. We have pushed much of it deep into our unconscious and subconscious, but it is still driving our bus. From here, we can move forward to do the mindset work.

We act on what we believe, not what we know.

"CREATE"

Create: Now, you step fully into being the Creator of your own experience. You move away from Victim energy and the perpetual cycle of Victim/Rescuer/Victim and into the powerful cycle of Creator. With more responsibility comes more power. And it is always your choice. Create what you want. Live the life you desire and dream of. This is what I call Quantum Living, and these are the 5 stages, the natural progression you move through to come to this place of Divine Power and Divine Abundance.

We must become the Master before we can Manifest. Learn to Master your Self, Master your Emotions, Master your Energy, Master your Gifts, and Master your Mindset.

Gratitude and Life Q & A

Fran Menley shared this great article that supports our recent discussions on the power of gratitude for all of life's experiences....

Question: I am confused regarding gratitude and life ... so how do we improve our life if we are supposed to be happy with what we got all the time ?

My Answer: By Johnathan Lockwood Huie

That is a great question. The answer comes in two parts...

1. If you truly are happy, what else would you want? How could you "improve" upon a truly 100% happy life?

2. Blessings flow toward gratitude. If you give thanks for your affluence, the love in your life, and so forth, that gratitude acts as a magnet to attract more affluence, love, and other blessings into your life. This works both energetically and in the physical world. Imagine that you give a small gift to each of two friends. One of them smiles at you and says, "Thank you so much." The other frowns and says, "Is this all you are giving me?" To which of your friends are you more likely to give another, larger, gift? That is the way Spirit works.

It is my practice to be grateful every day for ALL of life. Whatever appears to be a burden is either a deferred blessing or a lesson. Who am I to know Spirit's intention for me, so I believe in the future and I am grateful.

Each of us has been infinitely blessed - beginning with the gift of life. Whatever may appear to be missing or broken on any particular day, our glass is not half full, it is 99.9% full. More practically, when we feel ungrateful, we become unhappy and stressed. When we choose to feel and express our gratitude, the act of feeling and speaking our thanks creates a happiness within us. The more we express our gratitude, the more we have for which to be grateful.

I'm happy with how I've lived my life because I choose to be happy. Regrets and resentments are a sure path to unhappiness, so I am very careful to avoid them. I consciously forgive myself for any choices I made in the past that I would not repeat today.

I Receive ALL of Life with Thanksgiving - I have gratitude for EVERYTHING that has ever occurred to bring me to this moment. I give thanks for the joys and the sufferings, the moments of peace and the flashes of anger, the compassion and the indifference, the roar of my courage and the cold sweat of my fear. I accept gratefully the entirety of my past and my present life.

Today in My World: Let Today be a day to be grateful for everything. NOTICE all of life. Observe the tastes and smells, as well as the sights and sounds. Notice the gentle breeze, the bird, the flower, the tree. Pay attention to the baby and the kitten. Take five minutes today to place several pieces of fruit or other pleasant food in a bowl, and give thanks. Hold the bowl reverently, and give thanks for all of life.

"Tell me Something Good"

“Tell Me Something Good” - Michael Jordan Segal ©2012

Many people that work at the hospital know me by the phrase/question: “Tell me something good!” Of course there are many things in this world that are bad; HOWEVER, there are also many, many things in this world that are good.

It took me years before I realized this valuable life’s lesson, but I finally learned it! Therefore, I “spread” this message around work at the Harris Healthcare System, mainly at Ben Taub General Hospital on the trauma floor, to patients, families and staff.

On one occasion I called a discharged patient, Barbara, whom I had worked with over a lengthy hospitalization. Every time I would enter her room, I would ask her to “tell me something good!” At first, she did not have any answers because she felt that “nothing was good.” However, eventually she started thinking deeply and realized, “Sure, I have many problems, but I also have many positive things. At least I am able to say I woke up.”

She became positive and started smiling more and more, as she progressed daily. Eventually, she was discharged from the hospital. After a week, I called her to see how she was doing. Barbara answered the phone and I said, “Hi, this is Mike Segal.” I waited for her to respond . . . and waited . . . and waited some more. I heard nothing but breathing on the other end of the phone. I broke the silence by repeating, “This is Mike Segal” and added “from Ben Taub Hospital.” I was sure she now would realize who I was; however, again “nothing” but silence on the other end of the phone receiver. Quickly I said, “Tell me something good!”

I could “feel” Barbara’s smile as she screamed, “MIKE!” She started yelling out questions and said she was doing very well. Now, it was my turn to smile!

I never know what to expect when I ask that question. One day I walked into a room and saw a patient in his hospital bed with his wife close by in a chair. “Hi, it’s Mike. Hello John . . . Hello Sara. John, tell me something good.”

I had been working with his wife, mainly in the waiting room, so I had not had much interaction with John, especially since he had been in the ICU, heavily sedated. However, now it was my time to ask my question, “Tell me something good.”

John calmly answered, “Peanut Butter.”

I started laughing and said, “Yes . . . Peanut Butter is good, but tell me something good ABOUT YOU!”

“I am looking forward to eating a Peanut Butter sandwich.”

I continued to laugh as I thought, “At least he is not thinking negatively!”

Yet another patient, Mary, had been in the hospital for many weeks. She was beginning to get somewhat depressed, thinking on more than one occasion “that she would never be discharged from the hospital.” I tried to encourage her, having her focus on what was positive in her life: family, friends, improving . . . I told her about one of my favorite books (out of print), which was a collection of positive short stories called, “Focus On The Bagel, Not On The Hole.” I explained that, “Sure, there are many bad things in life; however, there are so many great things: Like the bagel!” I always tried to encourage her to “FOCUS ON THE BAGEL!”

One Monday when I walked into Mary’s room, I saw her smiling from ear to ear. I quickly asked, “Mary, tell me something good.” She hurriedly replied, “Mike, the doctor said maybe I could go home at the end of the week!”

I jumped back in, asking, “So what’s the first thing you’re going to do when you get home?”

Mary calmly smiled and said, “I’m going to eat a bagel . . . with Philadelphia cream cheese spread over and blocking the hole!”

I laughed, but realized how far she had come – both physically and emotionally. Sure, life can hurt, but Mary taught me that with a positive attitude, plus the Philadelphia cream cheese, most things are possible!

This is a description of the general pattern I experience in manifesting intentions.

Creating the intention

First, I get clear about what I want to manifest. Through meditation I put myself into a very relaxed state of mind, and I implant my new intention by concentrating on it for at least 60 seconds. The meditation is nothing complicated; I usually just do a few minutes of deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation.

I imagine my intention visually, so in my mind’s eye, I picture what my life will be like once the intention has already manifested. I inject a lot of positive emotion into these visualizations as well. If I can’t create strong positive emotions, then I know there’s no real desire. In that case I’ll either drop or alter the intention. Intentions without desire have very little power to manifest. If I don’t really, really, really want it, there’s no point in intending it. For example, intending a big screen TV for myself doesn’t work because I just don’t care enough about that sort of thing.

Alpha reflection

Usually within 24-72 hours of putting out a new intention, I experience the alpha reflection. I receive validation that the intention has taken hold. Normally this takes the form of a very noticeable synchronicity. Sometimes the synchronicity is part of manifesting the results; other times it just seems to be an acknowledgement that the intention was received. Many Million Dollar Experiment participants report alpha reflections within the first couple days of joining, like finding some extra money on the ground.

Last week I put out the intention to double my monthly income. A couple days later, an article I wrote last year got an unexpected link from a major media outlet, which sent me tons of new traffic. In one day I received almost $300 in donations, not to mention a significant boost in ad revenue (more than double my daily average). This temporary boost was congruent with my original intention, and it’s a good example of an alpha reflection. The intention didn’t actually manifest yet — it’s simply the universe’s way of saying, “Thanks, got it!”

Interestingly, I’ve noticed that the more I trust and expect my intentions to manifest, the weaker the alpha reflections are (in terms of their magnitude). I think this is partly because I’ve grown so accustomed to working with intention-manifestation that I don’t need to be beaten over the head with validation anymore. I’m just able to trust it. I still see the alpha reflections, but they aren’t normally as jolting. I don’t recall putting out an intention this year and not seeing a clear alpha reflection within a week, so I’m pretty sure it’s always there when the intention is properly formed. Recently I’ve put out over a dozen new intentions, and I enjoyed seeing all the creative winks from the universe to acknowledge their receipt.

Calm before the storm

The alpha reflection dies down pretty quickly, and then there’s a lull that can last anywhere from several days to several weeks. This period used to frustrate me because I thought my intentions had totally fizzled, and I know it frustrates many Million Dollar Experiment participants too — lots of people give up during this time. Big mistake! This is just the calm before the storm. It’s also the period where it’s most crucial to continue holding the intention and to carefully avoid putting out conflicting intentions. If I start harboring thoughts like, “Why isn’t this working?” or “I wonder if this will work,” I kill the intention. I must know it will work. Sometimes I kill intentions on purpose during this time when I realize I don’t really want them or if I think of something better to intend. It took me years of practice to develop the mental discipline to control my thoughts well enough to stay focused on what I want and not allow myself the luxury of contemplating what I don’t want. I’m nowhere near perfect, but I’m finally halfway decent at this now, and it makes a significant difference.

Beta reflection

As I continue to hold the intention and faithfully expect its manifestation, I eventually experience the beta reflection. Typically this begins more than a week after the intention is first formed. Whereas the alpha reflection is just an acknowledgement that the intention has been received, the beta reflection is the substantial beginning of the real manifestation.

The beta reflection is much longer, stronger, and slower than the alpha reflection. Imagine a thunderstorm. If the alpha reflection is a lightning flash, the beta reflection is the rolling thunder that arrives much later. Both originated with the same event, but they reach you at different times.

The beta reflection generally arrives in three forms: ideas, opportunities, and resources.

First, I experience a noticeable surge in ideas related to my original intention. These ideas may come in the form of spontaneous inspiration, or they may arrive through other people. For example, I might get a new optimization idea that takes only 20 minutes to implement and instantly boosts my income. Sometimes a good idea is all I need to manifest what I want, so I can carry it to completion on my own. But if the intention is big enough, then ideas and direct action won’t be enough by themselves.

The beta reflection also brings new opportunities. Often these seem to come out of nowhere. Someone I don’t even know may bring me a juicy opportunity related to my intention, even though I haven’t told anyone about it yet.

Lastly, the beta reflection brings new resources, which may include information, people, money, etc. Whatever is required to manifest the intention eventually comes into my life. Often I’ll experience three or more random people recommending the same book to me on the same day, and that book will just happen to contain exactly the answers I need to manifest my intention.

It’s still important to continue holding the intention during the beta reflection, but it’s not as difficult as during the pre-beta lull because now you have some genuine momentum. It doesn’t require as much faith to see that the intention is starting to manifest — even the logical mind is able to see it coming together. The main thing is to keep your logical mind from screwing it up by trying to control the process too much.

Depending on the complexity of the intention, the beta reflection can last for months or years. In fact, I believe our overall results in life can be interpreted as the long-term summation of our beta reflections from a lifetime of intentions. Whatever you imagine with enough energy will eventually manifest. If your thoughts are clear and focused, you’ll manifest your desires relatively quickly and easily. If your thoughts are jumbled and chaotic, you’ll manifest a seemingly random and haphazard life for yourself.

Manifestation

With the expansion of the beta reflection, the ultimate manifestation comes together in a fairly straightforward manner. Usually there’s some form of direct action involved, but the actions that follow are smooth, flowing, and easy. No tedium or struggle is required. The universe does 80-90% of the work. The final combination of ideas, opportunities, and resources are high leverage, making it possible to achieve fantastic results with a minimal investment of time and energy.

About five years ago, this intention-manifestation process was just a curiosity to me. I remember when I first noticed, “Wow, I can create synchronicities!” I got really good at creating alpha reflections, but that was it — no betas. At first I was frustrated because I couldn’t manage to stay focused on my desires long enough. I kept falling back into old thought patterns and inadvertently killed my best intentions within a matter of days, sometimes within a matter of hours. I’d think about building my business and then worry about how I was going to manage it. I’d think about improving my marriage and then have thoughts about breaking up. I’d think about moving to a nicer home and later imagine renewing my existing lease. No results but the status quo. I found it incredibly frustrating to be betrayed by my own thoughts.

One of the keys for me was to fully accept that staying focused on my desires was absolutely critical, not optional. Regardless of whether I think the universe is objective or subjective, I know that my dominant thoughts are the key determinants of my results in life. My thoughts control my decisions, and my decisions over time control my results. When I really understood that, I assumed a new level of responsibility for every thought that went through my mind. I decided to take conscious control of my thoughts no matter what. I saw that I could no longer afford to have my mind haphazardly dwelling on things I didn’t want.

Lately I’ve developed a tremendous respect for the power of intention. As I keep experimenting with it, I see abundant evidence that something very powerful is happening behind the scenes. I’m achieving my goals more easily than ever before. I’m doing more meditation and thinking and taking a lot less direct action. I do what feels most natural to me, and it just seems to work out perfectly. I allow the universe to handle most of the details while I focus on the high-level outcomes.

I will surely continue experimenting with the power of intention. Presently I spend about 30 minutes a day just holding my intentions and letting them swirl around in my imagination. Then I sit back and watch my external reality shift little by little to come into alignment with these intentions. The cumulative effect still blows me away. If I’m right about where this is heading, we should witness some enormously positive changes in my life over the next several years. I don’t know how long these beta reflections will take to fully unfold, but I’m certainly looking forward to finding out.

Use SMOG, not MOSG

When I was first learning to drive a car, my drivers education teacher taught me the acronym SMOG, which stands for Signal, Mirror, Over the shoulder, Go. It’s the order of actions to perform when changing lanes on the highway. Note that the first action is to signal your intention to change lanes. Of course, what do most people do? In practice they follow something like MOSG: Mirror, Over the shoulder, Signal, Go. They first determine whether or not they can change lanes by looking for an opening. If there’s no opening, they wait. They speed up or slow down to find a spot. They’re afraid that if they signal first when there’s no opening, they’ll look like a dolt because no one will let them in. But the truth is that even if there isn’t an opening, many drivers will allow you an opening if you signal first. If you don’t signal, the only way they can tell you want to change lanes is via telepathy. The longer you signal, even when there’s no opening at first, the more pressure you build in the other drivers to let you in.

This is a great analogy for how intention-manifestation works. You have to signal (intend) first. Sometimes if you look before signaling, there just won’t be an opening. But signal anyway, and you’ll create the very opening you seek.

For example, if you want a new relationship, let the universe know what you want. Signal! Don’t check your mirrors first to see if there’s someone available in the next lane. You’ll miss way too many wonderful opportunities that way.

Don’t give up!

It requires significant mental discipline to manifest both the alpha and the beta reflections of your intentions. Without the ability to stay mentally focused on what you want, noisy and conflicting mental chatter will destroy your best intentions before they have a chance to take root. It may take years of practice to develop the ability to stay focused on what you want. But the time is going to pass anyway, so you might as well put it to good use. I’ve even found it helpful to simply intend to get better at manifesting. Don’t give up!

The fiction of reality: Perception begins when the human brain receives data from the body's five senses. The mind then processes and applies meaning to the sensory information. "I want to start with a game," says neuroscientist and artist Beau Lotto at the outset of his TED talk on perception (http://www.ted.com/talks/beau_lotto_optical_illusions_show_how_we_see.html)

"To win this game, all you have to do is see the reality that's in front of you as it really is."

As it turns out, seeing that reality isn't as easy as it sounds, even when it comes to basic shapes and colors. Lotto uses a series of optical illusions involving light, color and space to show that even the most fundamental of our senses -- the way we perceive light and color -- can be subject to interpretation.

The variable, says Lotto, is context. The exact same image can have an infinite number of sources in the real world. When it comes to perception -- seeing, feeling, hearing, sensing things -- there is no such thing as objectivity. Humans evolved to make sense of things. Every time a stimulus comes to us, our brain does the efficient thing: It responds based on past experience. In so doing, the brain continually redefines normality. It is being shaped, literally, as a consequence of trial and error. "The brain did not evolve to see the world the way it really is -- we can't," Lotto says. "We can't help but to see things according to history -- our own history and that of our ancestors -- because we are defined by ecology. Not by our biology, not by our DNA, but by our history of interactions."

Sensory information can mean just about anything, Lotto observes. It's what we do with that information that matters.

When context distorts: Society gets inside of our heads and habits, says Ruha Benjamin, professor of sociology and African-American studies at Boston University. "It forms everything from our taste in food, our sensibilities, what we think is good, bad or evil. None of these beliefs occur in isolation." This profound social influence, known as "habitus," is acquired through activities and experiences of everyday life, and is often taken for granted. The concept hails as far back as Aristotle.

Quite often relying unconsciously on habitus for context serves us well. Until it doesn't. Take an infamous example of mistaken perception plucked from the news: So much of the encounter between Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman had to do with context and perceptions, Benjamin says.

"Think about the different ways in which a majority of Americans see the agency of black men," she says. "In certain contexts, like on a court during March Madness, we are perfectly comfortable celebrating these bodies. But take those same bodies and place them in a different context -- walking down the street in a predominantly white neighborhood -- and quickly that perception of black masculinity at the core of our culture changes context. And in this new context, being a black male may suddenly become a life and death issue."

And so we sometimes find ourselves at a crossroads, in a place of uncertainty, faced with perceptions borne of falsehood, misunderstanding, bias or disunity -- perceptions that do not serve us. Echoing Frankl, Lotto says of those types of perceptions: "We are responding and not choosing."

The beginning of awareness: According to Lotto, the creation of all new perceptions begins in the same way, with a single question: "Why?" "Why" is, in that sense, the most dangerous word in history, Lotto observes. Because as soon as you ask that question, you open up the possibility of change. So asking "why" may be the hardest thing for people to do. Education must be about creating new perceptions, Lotto says. Traditionally education has been about efficiency -- it wants to know what happens at the end. There is a right answer. But people really need to learn to move between the "why" and the "how."

Innovation and change are, at their very essence, a "why" proposition, says Jennifer Mueller, a psychologist and Wharton management professor who studies creativity. The "how" comes later. It is in this way that perception often becomes the gateway to innovation and change. "People are so averse to uncertainty that they can't see creativity. They are blind to it," Mueller notes. But by becoming aware of our mind-sets and perceptions, we can step in the direction of breakthroughs.

The power to choose a response: There are practical ways to start on the path to growth and innovation. You must at the outset be certain that you want change, Mueller says. "Be clear strategically whether you really are looking for something groundbreaking. Define what that means. Sometimes people call something innovation, but it really isn't." Lotto says that the underlying aim of his research is to help people transform by enabling them to understand and become part of learning about their own perceptions.

"I hope people will walk away from my experiments, not with an understanding of color, but an understanding of themselves, or at least a question of themselves." The first step, he says, is through awareness.

"You must see yourself see. It's about observation and curiosity, having a sense of wonder, becoming aware of the connection between the past and the present. Becoming an observer of yourself enables you to do amazing things."

Benjamin agrees. "Become aware of how your habitat forms your habits," she says. What we are fighting for, Benjamin says, is our imagination -- the right to imagine a life and relationships and a social world that are happier, less anxious, more harmonious and more just. "We are not being diligent enough or deliberate enough about cultivating our imagination. We have to fight for our ability to imagine the world we want. Because one form of oppression is telling people that they're not allowed to imagine something better and happier."

"Either there are no illusions or everything is an illusion," said Lotto at the conclusion of his remarks at the recent Being Human 2012 conference. "And given that we are pretty much all delusional, you might as well choose your delusion."

I am looking forward to sharing this great experience and discussion with you all. RSVP's are always appreciated!

Nancy

“Introduction to Animal Communication”

When we are in circle with others, the energy stays contained within the group giving back to all.

There are many reasons for why a gathering of people in a circle is powerful. A circle is a shape that is found repeatedly throughout the natural world, and it is a symbol of perfection. We recreate this perfect shape when we join others to form a circle. Being in a circle allows us experience each other as equals. Each person is the same distance apart from the next participant, and no one is seated higher than or stands apart from others in a circle. From tribal circles to the mythical round table of King Arthur, the circle has been the shape adopted by gatherings throughout history.

The circle is acknowledged as an archetype of wholeness and integration, with the center of a circle universally understood to symbolize Spirit - the Source. When a group of people come together in a circle, they are united. This unity becomes even more powerful when each person reaches out to touch a neighbor and clasps hands. This physical connection unites thought and action, mind and body, and spirit and form in a circle. Because a circle has no beginning and no end, the agreement to connect in a circle allows energy to circulate from one person to the next, rather than being dissipated into the environment.

Intenders Circle - Conscious Relationships

If you take a soul look at this, you will see that your need for relationship actually stems from your basic human need to overcome your earthly sense of separation.”
~ Caroline Reynolds, Spiritual Fitness

Dennis Merritt Jones : Life is a trip which we were not meant to travel alone and I mean that literally. If we stop and consider our life’s journey we shall see that we entered into a lifetime of relationships beginning the moment we arrived here. From our birth mother, followed by other family members, and literally every other person we have encountered along the journey, this thing called “our life” has been interwoven like a string of fine pearls on one single invisible silver thread called “Relationship.”

Dennis has long defined the word "Relation-ship" as a vessel in which two or more people journey towards a common destination. From our significant other, to our family members, to the people with whom we work, to our neighbors and beyond, the one thing all relationships have in common is the necessity to work together in a manner that makes the relationship meaningful. The richness and depth of any relationship is measured in part by the ability of those in the relationship to authentically be themselves and, at the same time, honor the commitments inherent in any meaningful relationship. Among those commitments are, respect, reverence, loyalty, honesty, and the willingness to communicate with transparency. From the misunderstandings, confusion and conflicts in so many people's lives it is self-evident that open, clear and safe communication isn't something most of us are taught; if ever, it is learned in the school of life, and in the process "of making them conscious" many relationships don't survive.

When the topic of relationships come up most of us immediately think “significant other” relationships because that is where we invest a majority of our time. However, when we pause and consider the many other people we connect with at one level or another on a daily basis we’ll see that our lives are filled with relationships. For me the realization is that without all of those relationships life would be meaningless. From the strangers I chat with while standing in line at the market, to my most beloved family members (including my dog Mac) and everyone in between; without them I would not want to be here--without those relationships life would be hollow. While life itself is the ultimate gift from the Creator, relationships are how the gift is woven into the tapestry of a life worth living; each separate thread, when combined with the others, adds a color, richness and dimension to life that we could never experience without them.

Unless we live isolated and alone at the top of a mountain, having relationships is not an option; from the moment our feet hit the floor in the morning we enter into a continuum of relationships, beginning with the face we see staring back at us in the mirror. So, it’s not a matter of “if” we will have relationships; it’s a question of “how conscious” shall we be in them. How mindfully awake we are in our relationships determines what we shall bring to them and receive from them.

The poet and artist Flavia said something profound about relationships when he wrote, “Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people stay for a while, and give us a deeper understanding of what is truly important in this life. They touch our souls…we gain strength from the footprints they have left on our hearts and we will never be the same.” In other words, every relationship we have, from our significant others, family and friends, to our neighbors and coworkers, and even the occasional stranger we allow into our lives, all bear something in common: Each will leave “footprints” on our hearts, as we will in theirs. Those footprints may leave a positive or, in some cases, negative impression but, in either case, each relationship brings with it, if we are conscious, an opportunity to learn more about our authentic selves and the role each person in our life plays in shaping who it is we have come to earth to be.

The take-a-way for me is this: Conscious relationships matter. The more conscious and spiritually grounded we are in our relationships the more authentic (or real) they become. Authenticity is the passageway leading directly to the soul. Is it possible to have truly authentic relationships wherein we can be who we really are and, at the same time, create space for others to be who they really are? I propose that it is not only possible but it will become the norm for any person who is willing to make the commitment to do the work. Our relationships are the vehicles for our evolution as individuals and a species. If we are fully conscious, our relationships offer us the clearest view of our own souls because they invite us to look directly into the face of God and see our own reflection. From a spiritual perspective we have come here to have relationships. From the cradle to the grave and all along the way in between, it is the relationships we have on the journey that truly make life worth living, so why not make the journey consciously?

Daily OM - April 24, 2012
The Power of Union - Entering into Partnership

In partnership and relationship we harness the power of union. The purpose of partnership is to create something greater than we can create alone. Not because of any deficiency or incompleteness in us, but because each of us is unique, with our own talents and abilities, and in partnership we increase the efforts and talents available for creating something meaningful together. All partnerships, whether romantic, creative, or professionally-based, can be powerful relationships for personal growth. In partnership we harness the power of union.

It is important to choose our partnerships consciously. Sometimes forged quickly during times of need, we may find ourselves rushing into unions with perhaps not the clearest intentions. Partnerships created from those starting point might serve our immediate needs, but the repercussions of a union so quickly fostered without much thought can be difficult to recover from. Granted, there is something to learn from every relationship, but looking to another to fix or complete us can turn a partnership into a dependent bond. If we can stay clear about what we want and what we need in a partnership, while staying grounded and remembering that we are our own source of happiness and fulfillment, we can create partnerships that support and enhance the best of who we are.

Everyone in our lives is a mirror reflecting back the parts we love and dislike about ourselves. If we have the courage to recognize our reflections in each other, we can grow through our partnerships. A partnership that offers both acceptance of who we are and an opportunity for personal transformation can be fertile ground for growing a healthy, lasting union. When we find this kind of partnership, we are more likely to want to keep it, invest in it, and nurture it.

Life is a collaborative effort. Much of what we do can be enhanced through partnership. Together we are stronger because our personal power is multiplied by two. Through partnership we experience the joys of working, living, and loving together.

Do you have more to share about relationships? We look forward to your presence in the Circle. RSVP's are appreciated.

Nancy

World Tai Chi & Qigong Day Celebration

 - Denver

From Ashi http://graceyourspace.com/blog - One day I was in the amazing house that we were caretaking, feeling incredible gratitude at its beauty and the opportunity it gave my husband and me. This home had a lovely pergola-covered patio, where I would frequently enjoy my breakfast or lunch when nice weather beckoned.

This house was so amazing for us that I once again found myself in a place of gratitude as I was walking out onto the patio. As I stepped through the doors, I heard a familiar childhood voice that said, “Well, enjoy it now because it won’t last.” It’s a tricky thing when “shoulds” get disguised as some other energy and heart-draining directive. The message here really was “you shouldn’t enjoy feeling happy, or having nice things, because you will probably lose them and then be disappointed. Or, you shouldn’t dream of something more or better because you can’t have it anyway and you’ll be disappointed.”

I heard that familiar voice so clearly that I stopped in my tracks and witnessed it. I simply responded with “thank you, but that is not my truth.” I then flicked the fingers of my hand to release the energy from my space. . . on continued onto the patio to enjoy chirping birds, sunshine and a yummy lunch.

Shoulds come from our families and society. They come from a place, not of trying to hurt us or limit us, but from the place in them that feels limited or less than. They likely heard those same shoulds when they were growing up. If one doesn’t become conscious of their thoughts, then it is easy to pass them on to our own children and others as being THE truth, when it is merely their truth.

No matter what the should is that runs through your daily thoughts, remember that they are someone else’s truth essentially implanted in your psyche at some point in time: “You should have had plenty of money saved by your age; you should only marry once – as in, you made your bed, now you should lie in it . . . no matter what; you should follow the rules; you should do as you are told; you should not question authority or anything else.”

The beautiful thing about our journeys is that we have an ability to choose, to change our minds about what we believe, or to simply change the channel.

If you are interested in clearing some of your internal clutter that is represented by the shoulds in your life, here are easy steps to move you in the direction of more freedom and equanimity in your space:

1. Acknowledge that you heard the should. This creates more awareness which in turn helps you feel more empowered and able to choose how you wish to respond. If the statement is not who you are, state that out loud/to yourself.

2. Witness the should statement, versus emotionally engaging with it once again and bringing that energy deeper into your psyche. Then that particular should energy will be able to effortlessly leave your space – like watching a leaf floating down a stream. Whenever opportunities to notice something like this come up for me, I view it as a gift, as an opportunity to heal and release.

3. Bless the source of the should (or offer a simple blessing of gratitude that will help you release that energy more easily).

4. Release the energy in whatever way suits you (i.e., flick your fingers to remove it from your space; imagine a big balloon and put the should in the balloon – then release the balloon into the sky; with intention, blow it out of your space with three quick breaths)

Ride the wave of the Spring Cleaning energy at this time of year and, in addition to sprucing up your physical home, notice opportunities to release some old shoulds in your life. It is a time of renewal and new birth . . . and nothing is more important than your own individual rejuvenation.

You don't have to work at being in the high vibration that is natural toyou, because it is natural to you. But you do have to stop holding thethoughts that cause you to lower your vibration. It's a matter of nolonger giving your attention to things that don't allow your cork to floator don't allow you to vibrate in harmony with who you really are.

--- Abraham

From Daily OM: The power of the mind is a curious thing, because it is so powerful yet so difficult to control sometimes. We find ourselves thinking a certain way, knowing that this thought may be creating trouble for us yet we find it difficult to stop. For example, many people have the experience of getting sick at the same time every year or every time they go on a plane. They may even be aware that their beliefs impact their experiences, so continue to think they will get sick and then they do.

Sometimes we need to get sick in order to process something or move something through our bodies. But often we get sick, or feel exhausted, because we don’t make the effort to galvanize the power of our minds in the service of our physical health, which is one of its most important functions. We really can use it to communicate to our bodies, yet we often regard the two as separate entities that have little to do with one another.

Knowing this, we have the power to create physical health and mental health, simply by paying attention to the tapes running in our minds. Once we hear ourselves, we have the option to let that tape keep running or to make a new recording. We harness the power of the mind in our defense when we choose supportive, healing words that foster good health and high spirits. All we need to do is remember to tend the field of our mind with the attentive and loving hand of a master gardener tending her flower beds, culling out the weeds so that the blossoms may come to fruition.

Celebrating our Intenders Circle
From Daily OM: Spending time with people whose company you find stimulating can invigorate you and lift your spirits. The company of people you count among your favorites can provide a welcome relief to the day’s stress. As you bask in the affirmative energy that these people emit, you are positively affected by them. Their enthusiasm for life and for fun will inspire you to think optimistically and focus on the enjoyment you can experience rather than the frustrations of the day. You’ll feel relaxed and ready for anything. When you spend time with people you find stimulating today, your energy level will surge.

Looking forward to our stimulating time together this Tuesday. Please print and bring this blog as we will read and share our inspired ideas to support each other in mindfulness.

RSVP's are always appreciated.
Nancy
